Marian Freistühler is a filmmaker based in Hamburg, Germany. He holds a degree in theatre and media science and studied film at the University of Fine Arts (HFBK) Hamburg, where he also worked as a tutor in the department of experimental film. His short ISLANDS IN THE CITY (D 2021, 23’) was selected in Clermont-Ferrand, Filmfest Dresden and Hofer Filmtage, among others. It got a Special Mention at Tel Aviv ISFF. Marian co-founded the production company Ohne Falsch Film and received the German Short Film Award Lola for producing ALTURAS (D 2020, 30’). In 2024, his first mini-series BRÜT, co-written and co-directed with Oliver Bassemir, was released on German TV (NDR).
Reoccurring motifs in Marian's work include exhaustion and comedy, shyness and longing, social codes and queer perspectives, sunsets and snacks.

He has been a programmer for the international competition at Short Film Festival Hamburg since 2020 and is a founding member of the film lab Analogfilmwerke Hamburg. As a guest lecturer, he taught at dffb berlin and HFBK Hamburg about queer cinema and short film programming. In 2025, he participated in the extensive European Workshop for New Curators, hosted by Talking Shorts. He received scholarships from Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and Claussen-Simon-Stiftung.
